About Our Charters and Vessel
May to September is prime time for Halibut
and Chinook Salmon fishing. Our charters depart from Port Renfrew,
a beautiful, friendly, quiet west coast town just a one-hour
drive from Lake Cowichan, or two hours from Victoria. This
season promises abundant catches of trophy salmon weighing
upwards of 50 pounds, caught either just off the beach, or
offshore at the Halibut fishing grounds near Swiftsure Bank.
This is the fishing hot spot, and it is not uncommon to return
from a day at "The Bank" with the daily catch limit
of both Salmon and Halibut.
Our 26ft Trophy "Quarter Tide" is
one fantastic fishing machine! It's fiberglass hull cuts through
any sea for a smooth ride and her interior boasts lots of room
for fishing. The cabin offers the ultimate in comfort, private
head and plenty
of room for a midday nap should you get a bit pooped out hauling
all those big slabs over the side!

"Quarter Tide" is
fully equipped with the best in electronics, gear and we are
trained and safety certified.
Depending upon the tide, and
where clients will come aboard, we generally head out for the
day between 5:00AM and 6:00AM, returning around 3:00PM, or
upon limiting out for the day! Salmon fishing begins on "The
Beach" just outside of the bay, and is approximately a
15-minute boat ride depending on whether or not we are pulling
the crab traps. Did I mention the crabbing yet? May and June
are the months for feasting on crab by the campfire after a
full and fun day fishing.
The Halibut fishing grounds are approximately
another hours boat ride, following the spectacular rugged west
coast, and more often than not you will see whales, seals,
sea lions, eagles, pelicans, porpoises and much more magnificent
bird and marine life. Catching Halibut is truly an experience
of a lifetime! These monster bottom fish generally range between
20 and 50 pounds, but often the cheering and hollering of lucky
anglers can be heard from far across the water as they haul "Barn
Doors" weighing over 100 pounds up into their boats. And
that's supper on the table for months to come!
September to
November is Coho season and the fun is non-stop when it comes
to catching these feisty acrobats! For the
fly fishing enthusiast, you've never had such fun!
Following
fishing, we will return to the dock where Shawn and Steph will
clean and bag your fish.
Port Renfrew also offers a variety
of other outdoor activities and experiences including whale
watching, river fishing, kayaking, hiking and beach combing.
There are lots of great places to stay, and it is impossible
to get a bad meal anywhere in this lovely town. The people
are friendly, the food is delicious and the service is the
best!
When preparing for your fishing trip, here are a few things
you must remember to bring along. You will need a Saltwater
Fishing License and Conservation Tag. They can be purchased
online ( Canadians only ) or at any sporting goods store. Also
bring a large cooler with ice. You will need to bring lunch
and refreshments, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, warm layers
of clothing and a warm coat. Wear comfortable non-slip footwear
and don't forget your camera! We have various floatation suits
and raingear on board. If you suffer from seasickness please
visit your Pharmacist prior to your trip, and it may be recommended
that you start your patch or medication a day or two before
fishing. So don't spoil your fun, waiting until you are already
sick is too late to try to take anything!
